We pride ourselves on being a friendly, efficient and supportive college with strong administration.  Our courses provide a high standard of education equivalent to other leading colleges but with flexible start dates and a choice of attendance days.  You may start your chosen course at anytime in the year and work at a pace that suits your lifestyle and current commitmentsFor those wishing to practise nutritional therapy for a living, the college provides excellent business development and marketing resources to give you the best chance of success.

Nutritional Therapy Today

As interest in the field of nutrition has exploded in recent years so the role of the Nutritional Therapist has become more in demand.  More than ever it has become essential for training to be of the highest standard and progressively more evidence based in order to gain credibility with peer professions.

There are no training or qualification standards required at government level for Nutritional Therapists to adhere to.  However, the industry has sought to develop its own standards over the past few years.

The College of Natural Therapy has been active in achieving these standards being a founder member of The Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC).

Nutritional Therapy is now recognised as a profession in its own right with recently approved national occupation standards (NOS).  The course content of our Nutritional Therapy Diploma ensures that the graduating therapist meets these standards along with the educational and clinical hour requirements of the core curriculum recommended by the NTC, the emerging governing body of nutritional therapy.

Of course for those who wish to practise as a Nutritional Therapist becoming full trained to the required level is only just the beginning.  The ability to market oneself and, for the more ambitious, to develop business building skills are the final steps to becoming successful in practice.

About the Courses

Each student is assigned a personal tutor who will help, encourage and guide him/her through the course.

The courses are divided into modules.  Each module requires between ten to twenty hours study time and will be accompanied by an assignment (requiring approximately ten hours) which must be completed and returned to the tutor for marking.  This will comprise of a set of questions.  Modules in the Basic Health          Sciences Diploma course and higher will also include clinical assignments (time to complete variable, depending on complexity).  Each assignment is examined to assess the students understanding and is awarded an appropriate mark.  A minimum of 65% is required for each module.

Specific books will be recommended to complement each course and additional reading lists are available upon request.

Introduction to Chemistry

This Foundation course covers the principles of Chemistry related to biological systems and provides the fundamental knowledge that is essential to the study of nutrition.

You will gain an understanding of the most basic level of organisation within the body - the chemical level.

Module 1 covers Inorganic Chemistry.  All forms of matter are made from elements, the smallest unit of which is the atom.  Time is spent understanding the structure and properties of the atom in order to appreciate how atoms combine as they do to form molecules such as proteins and to understand the basis of the chemical reactions upon which life depends.  Other areas covered within the syllabus include the properties of water, alkalinity and acidity, and the principles underpinning transport into cells and cellular energy production.

Module 2 covers Organic Chemistry, otherwise known as ‘carbon chemistry, the chemistry of life’.  The material within this module, whilst consolidating material from Module 1, is designed to familiarise the student with the main groups of biological molecules and their biochemical properties.

The basic principles learned within Module 1 and their biological application within Module 2 provide the essential tools to progress onto the next level of study.

Self-assessment exercises are undertaken throughout the modules to check your understanding.   Audio CDs also accompany each module providing additional support and reinforcement of key concepts.

This is a lively introduction designed to stimulate your interest and make ‘demystifying’ chemistry a pleasurable experience.

“I had no idea how logical and enjoyable chemistry could be.  This has been a great introductory course”

                                                                                                                      J. Turner, Northampton

Anatomy & Physiology Certificate

Knowledge of how the body is structured (anatomy) and how the different parts work (physiology) is a prerequisite to the understanding of health and the features and mechanisms associated with disease.

Module 1 covers the next level of organisation within the body – the cellular level.  It explains the structure of the cell and the specialised units within it (organelles) and their functions.  In addition, you will learn about cell replication and more about cellular transport and the maintenance of homeostasis.

Modules 2-10 explain how the main physiological systems* of the body work, describing their location, their structure and functions and how they interrelate.  These modules work through the remaining levels of structural organisation within the body from explaining the formation of the different types of tissue to their combining to form organs and finally to the collection of organs with similar functions to form the various body systems*.
